Golf Warm-Up Stretch - Shoulder Rotation Stretch

Movement:

  • Stand holding a club, hands shoulder width apart, palms down, club horizontal to the ground.
  • Feet are also shoulder width apart or closer if desired. Keep only a slight knee bend.
  • Take right arm and twist the club so your palms are face up. Feel the stretch.
  • Rotate club back to start position.
  • Take left arm and twist the club so your palms are face up. Feel the stretch.
  • Rotate club back to start position.

Callaway Golf Clubs

Although I am not sponsored by Callaway Golf, I recommend trying them out.

Certified Pre-Owned Callaway Golf Clubs

Callaway Golf designs, creates, builds and sells better golf equipment. That means that any new club, ball or putter in the Callaway Golf family must be a significant improvement not only upon the products of competitors, but also their own.

Dr Tant - Biomechanics 101 - Planes of Motion

What is biomechanics of the golf swing?

Biomechanics is defined as the application of mechanical principles (physical laws of nature) in the study of the human body. The human body is composed of segments linked together at the joints. Muscles create a contraction to move the segments and create a motion. The fewer the links, the
simpler the motion. A golf swing is a very complex motion with numerous links that must be timed to create maximum power at contact.

It is very useful to describe segment and body movements in a plane of motion around an axis of rotation. I’m sure you have heard about the swing plane of the golf swing. There are three imaginary planes with an axis
running perpendicular to the plane.

The Medial-Lateral (ML) axis, from side to side direction, is perpendicular to the Sagittal plane, which divides the body or segment into right and left sides. Flexion and extension are primary movements.

The Anterior-Posterior axis, from front to back, is perpendicular to the Frontal plane, which divides the body into front and back halves. Abduction and adduction are primary movements.

The Longitudinal axis, from top to bottom, is perpendicular to the Transverse plane and divides the body into top and bottom halves. Rotation is the primary movement.

The golf swing is actually diagonal to the ground and does not completely fit into any of the three cardinal planes.

Golf Swing Warm-Up “Address Position Rotation”

Movement:

  • Place a club across your shoulders.
  • Get into your address position.
  • Rotate your shoulders back and through just as you would during the golf swing.

Golfer Physical Characteristics

Golfer physical characteristics will vary between all individuals, male and female. There is no ideal body type. Each body type must integrate stability, flexibility, coordination, control, muscular strength, muscular power and muscular endurance to achieve optimal swing performance. If there is a deficit in one or more of these key areas, the golfer will be forced to compensate by altering the swing.

Determine your current Static Posture, this lays a foundation for remaining physical assessments:

Static Posture Assessment

1) Flexibility - The normal extensibility of all soft tissues that allow full range of motion of a joint. Flexibility training integrates various stretches, in all three planes of motion, to produce maximum extensibility of tissues.

Fitness Flexibility Test

2) Muscular Strength - The ability of the neuromuscular system to produce internal tension to overcome an external force.

Muscular Strength Test

3) Muscular Endurance - The ability of the body to produce low levels of force and maintain it for extended periods of time.

4) Muscular Power - Ability of the neuromuscular system to produce the greatest force in the shortest time.

5) Balance / Stability - The ability of the body to maintain postural equilibrium and support joints during movement.

6) Coordination / Motor Control - The involved structures and mechanisms that the central nervous system uses to assimilate and integrate sensory information with previous experiences.

7) Anthropometrics - The study of anthropometrics or human measurements concerned with physical sizes and shapes of humans (i.e. height, size, weight, strength, and body segment proportions).

Dr Cynthia Tant introduces Biomechanics

Introduction to Biomechanics

Dr. Cynthia Tant

Hi, my name is Dr. Cynthia Tant. To let you know about my background, I received my PhD from Texas Woman’s University in biomechanics and spent 20 years teaching and coaching on the university level. Lynn Beasley, the pro golfer and fitness expert this blog is based on became interested in biomechanics while a student of mine at the University of West Florida.

To find out more about our science based golf analysis program visit TotalGolfSwingSystem. Throughout your learning experience of the “Total Golf Swing System” you will receive weekly audio and text scientific principles related to the golf swing. I make every attempt to define the terms as they relate to human motion and specifically to your golf swing. During your weekly biomechanics tip I will discuss the qualitative approach, describing movement in non numerical terms, without using a significant amount of math. Unless you would like for me to teach you a few math courses and physics, we will be keeping it simple!

The Total Golf System Ladies Meet the Great Eddie Murray

Eddie Murray - Baseball Great

Cindy, Lynn, Eddie and Mildred in Los Angeles, CA

Consistency, durability and dominance characterized the career of Eddie Murray. One of baseball’s most productive hitters from the late 1970s through the 1990s, Murray is one of only three players to have totaled both 3,000 hits and 500 home runs, joining Hank Aaron and Willie Mays. The all-time career RBI leader among switch-hitters, the three-time Gold Glove Award winner at first base was an eight-time All-Star and had six consecutive top-10 finishes in voting for the Most Valuable Player Award.
